drip bags vs instant vs pods

The 3 formats all promise 1 cup with almost no work. They operate differently. The differences control the flavor of the cup, the equipment you must own, and the waste that remains.

instant coffee

Instant coffee is coffee that a factory brewed and then dried into a powder. The powder mixes into hot water. You do not brew it. It is the fastest format and usually the least costly. The drying step removes the volatile compounds that make the aroma. pods

A pod is a plastic or aluminum capsule with ground coffee inside. A machine pushes hot water through the capsule. The cup is the same each time. The machine is the cost: you buy it, give it counter space, and clean it. Each cup also leaves a capsule as waste. Machine methods without a paper filter also let more diterpenes into the cup.

drip bags

If speed and cost are the only measures, instant coffee wins. If you drink many identical cups each day at one counter, a pod machine is applicable. The drip bag is for a cup with real flavor in places a machine cannot go: a desk, a hotel room, a trail. It is the only format of the 3 that makes real filter coffee.
