why japan puts pour over in a packet

A convenience store in Japan sells an item that most American stores never had. It is a flat paper packet that unfolds into a pour-over filter and hangs on a cup. The name of the format is the drip bag. In Japan, drip bags are an everyday item. Office workers keep them in desk drawers. Hotels put them beside the kettle.

where it started

Japan made hand-poured coffee a craft decades before the American specialty wave. The kissaten, the old Japanese coffee house, made slow filter coffee a standard. In the 1990s, the drip bag came from a practical question: is the hand-poured cup possible without the equipment? The answer was a die-cut paper frame. The frame folds flat, carries its own dose of grounds, and makes any mug into a dripper.

The format worked because it kept the method. Water still goes through grounds and paper. Only the apparatus is gone, and 2 minutes remain.

why the US missed it

America answered the same question in the same decade with the pod and the machine. Pods gave speed and a constant result. They also carried an idea: that an easy cup must come from automation. The drip bag carries the opposite idea: that an easy cup must come from less equipment, not more. The format almost did not cross the Pacific. Most American coffee drinkers have never seen one. 1. 1931 · tanganyika

   A Scott Laboratories researcher finds drought-resistant coffee trees in Tanganyika, now Tanzania.

2. 1935 · kabete, kenya

   The laboratory selects tree number 28 from that stock. The variety gets the name SL28.

3. 1935 to now

   Kenyan farms make SL28 famous. The variety becomes a standard for east African quality.

4. 2026 · karatu, tanzania

   Batch 001 is SL28 from Gaia Estate. The variety is home.
