what is a coffee drip bag

A coffee drip bag is a single-serve pour-over. The packet contains ground coffee in a flat paper filter. The filter has 2 paper ears. The ears unfold and hold the filter on the rim of your mug. You pour hot water through the filter, and the coffee collects in the mug below. When the flow stops, you remove the filter and discard it.
That is the full method. No machine, no dripper, no grinder, no cleanup.
how a drip bag works
A drip bag is a pour-over with the equipment as part of the packet. In a manual pour-over, a cone holds a paper filter, and the filter holds the grounds. In a drip bag, a paper frame does the work of the cone. The extraction is the same. Hot water removes the flavor from the coffee on its way through. The paper keeps the grounds and the oils out of the cup. The result is a clean cup.

Air is the problem for ground coffee. A review from the Specialty Coffee Association found that oxygen is the most important cause of stale coffee.SCA review The grind makes the problem worse, because it opens much more of the coffee surface to the air. Studies of ground coffee show that the important aroma compounds go away in hours, not weeks. This is why each toshi packet has a nitrogen seal. The nitrogen replaces the oxygen, and the clock stops until you open the packet.
The nitrogen seal keeps the coffee good approximately 20 times longer.

what the paper does for you
The paper does more than catch the grounds. Coffee contains cafestol and kahweol, 2 compounds that can increase LDL cholesterol. Studies show that a paper filter removes almost all of these compounds from the cup.PubMed 29735059 This is a fact about filters, not a medical claim.

where the format comes from
The drip bag comes from Japan. It became common there in the 1990s. Stores in Japan sell drip bags the same way that American stores sell tea bags. The large Japanese coffee brands all make them. The format stayed almost unknown in the US, where single-serve became a pod and a machine. The history is in why japan puts pour over in a packet.

how to know a good one
The format does not control the quality. The coffee inside does. Examine the packet for these items: a roast date, a named farm or region, the dose (10 g to 12 g is standard), and a nitrogen seal. If a brand does not show the roast date or the source, that is also an answer.
